Transition Season

on May 28, 2026

Seen Clearly Now

As the bush prepares for winter, our reserve begins to transform before your eyes. Dense summer vegetation recedes, the air sharpens, and the landscape reveals details hidden during the wetter months, from elephant paths carved into the veld to prominent termite mounds and exposed riverbeds etched with intricate patterns. Wildlife make the most of the sunny shorter days, while evenings beneath star-filled skies become part of the rhythm of safari once again.

With vegetation thinning across the reserve, the season offers a different perspective of the wilderness. Leopards move gracefully across open ground, buffalo traverse the landscape with greater visibility, and our resident bird species settle into the cooler air as their own. While we don’t consider one season superior to another for wildlife sightings, we recognise distinct characteristics of this period that continue to draw guests from around the world, year after year.

When Everything Sharpens

Ask any photographer why they love the dry months and they’ll tell you about the light. Less moisture means colours burn deeper, sunsets that glow ochre, and mornings so clear that everything appears closer than it is.

Sound carries differently, too. An elephant snapping a branch echoes across kilometres. Lions calling to each other in the darkness carry on the still air like a conversation you’re not meant to hear. At night, the soundscape becomes a map for those patient enough to listen, revealing what’s moving, hunting and living across our reserve.

Firelight and Constellations

When the sun drops and the temperature follows, you’ll find yourself drawn to the fires burning at the lodges. After returning from your night drive, the snap and warmth of burning wood, dinner served under the sky thick with stars, are comforting rituals.

Look up. Winter reveals the sky differently. Orion dominates the northern horizon, his three-star belt unmistakable. Sirius burns white and brilliant, the brightest point in the darkness. The Milky Way stretches across the heavens with an intensity you don’t see in summer, while the Southern Cross hangs low.

Urban Interlude

If you should follow the Southern Cross and weave a visit to Cape Town into your journey, our Claremont Boutique Hotel offers an ideal complement. Wine tasting in the Constantia Valley, no matter the weather, taking the cable car up Table Mountain on crisp mornings, or simply relaxing next to a crackling fire in the hundred-year-old Manor House while the soft rain patters against the windows.

The rooms invite you to stay, spacious and private, with small design details that make the space feel considered. Cape Town in winter brings softer light over the mountains, quieter streets, and a pace that lets you connect with the city rather than rush through it.

What Comes Next

With an anticipated opening in early August, Sandringham Private Game Reserve will be positioned alongside the Timbavati River. August sits deep in the dry season, when the river reveals its full character, exposing sandbars where crocodiles bask, and hippos concentrate in remaining pools. Sandringham’s design makes the most of this. Every suite frames views of the river and the mountains beyond. We’ve chosen materials that will weather beautifully with time, and the interiors echo the elements that define this place: water, greenery, and the meeting of earth and sky.

As the months progress toward spring, transitions will continue to unfold. The landscape will shift from sparsity back to abundance, the rivers will rise again, and Sandringham will offer you a new vantage point from which to witness these changes.

Each season teaches us something about seeing the same place with new eyes, about how timing reveals entirely different perspectives. We invite you to experience this moment of transition with us.

Warm regards
