Restoring the Landscape and Rebuilding Trust

on Jun 25, 2026

Stewardship In Action

When given enough time, nature has an extraordinary ability to heal itself. The challenge lies in creating the conditions for that healing to begin.

That is the story unfolding at Sandringham Private Game Reserve. When the Sabi Sabi Collection assumed custodianship of the reserve, the vision extended beyond developing just another safari destination. It was about restoring balance to a landscape shaped by years of neglect and historical hunting pressure and creating a future where both wildlife and wilderness could thrive once again.

The effects of the past were visible across the reserve. Sections of habitat had been degraded, natural systems disrupted and many animals had learned to associate humans with danger. Reversing that legacy would require patience, expertise and a long-term commitment to conservation.

Trust Is Not Won Overnight

One of the most fascinating aspects of the journey has been rebuilding the relationship between wildlife and people. Through a partnership with the Tracker Training Academy, student trackers spend days following animals through the bush, locating them and then moving on. There is no interference, pressure or disturbance. Over time, these repeated encounters help reshape how wildlife responds to human presence, teaching animals that humans no longer pose a threat.

A similar approach guides our partnership with WildEarth. Vehicles approach animals, observe and film them, and then leave them alone. Every interaction reinforces the message that Sandringham is now a place of protection.

The results are already evident. Predator activity has increased steadily, while sightings continue to improve as animals become more comfortable moving through the bush. Some species remain understandably cautious, but meaningful change takes time, and all signs point towards a healthier future.

Helping Nature Find Its Rhythm Again

Restoring the landscape itself has required a deep understanding of natural systems and a willingness to work with nature rather than against it.

Environmental assessments identified areas affected by erosion, overgrazing and damaged infrastructure. Instead of relying on artificial solutions, the focus has been on helping natural processes recover. Brush packing has been used to stabilise vulnerable soils and encourage vegetation to regenerate naturally, while river systems and dams have been carefully restored to support healthy water flow throughout the reserve.

Almost 200 kilometres of roads also required rehabilitation. Drainage systems were redesigned and upgraded to ensure rainfall is directed back into the environment rather than washing away valuable soil. Recent heavy rains and flooding provided an unexpected test of the work, and the results were encouraging, with the upgraded systems performing exactly as intended.

Importantly, Sandringham has resisted the temptation to create artificial waterholes. With three naturally supplied dams already in place, the reserve’s philosophy is to work with the landscape rather than alter it unnecessarily. A dedicated habitat team continues this work every day, removing invasive plant species and protecting the integrity of the ecosystem.

Small Signs of Success

A fresh predator track on the road. A previously absent species returning to the area. Vegetation reclaiming an eroded hillside. These small signs tell the story of conservation milestones.

Equally important has been the involvement of the local community. Local labour teams have contributed significantly to the restoration process, creating employment opportunities and developing skills that will continue to benefit the region as Sandringham evolves.

Part of a Bigger Story

What is happening at Sandringham forms part of the wider vision of the Sabi Sabi Collection – a collection built around conservation, hospitality and a sense of place.

At the heart of that story is Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, where more than 45 years of conservation have helped create one of Africa’s most respected safari destinations. In Cape Town, our Claremont Boutique Hotel offers a different perspective on South Africa, celebrating the heritage, culture and character of the Mother City through an intimate boutique hotel experience.

Sandringham represents the next chapter in this journey. It is a place where guests will witness not only remarkable wilderness, but also the power of thoughtful stewardship. What makes Sandringham so special is that it is not simply a reserve in the making. It is a living example of what can happen when conservation and optimism come together to give a landscape the chance to flourish once again.

We look forward to welcoming you there soon.

Warm regards,
The Sabi Sabi Collection Team
