A Living Legacy

Almost fifty years leaves a considerable archive, although not all of it is kept in photographs and documents. Some of the most valuable records of Sabi Sabi exist in the memories of people who have spent much of their lives here: the colleagues who first showed them the way, the methods that have changed with experience and small pieces of advice that, decades later, still influence how something is done. 

Today, South Africa celebrates Heritage Day. We have been thinking less about commemorating the past than about the curious way it continues to inhabit the present. Heritage is not just about what survives; it is what remains useful, meaningful or important enough for one generation to place it in the hands of another.

The safari world of 1979 belonged to a different era of travel, while conservation, hospitality and our understanding of the relationship between protected wilderness and neighbouring communities have evolved enormously since then. Sabi Sabi has evolved too, sometimes through bold decisions and at other times through the accumulation of experience that only comes from doing something for a very long time. 

What Time Teaches Us

The bush is good at dismantling certainty. The same road travelled hundreds of times can produce something entirely unexpected on the next occasion, while years spent in the wilderness tend to make the finest guides and trackers more observant rather than more absolute in their conclusions.

That willingness to keep learning extends beyond a game drive. Across Sabi Sabi, much of what defines the guest experience has been refined through years of paying attention; understanding when anticipation is more powerful than abundance, recognising the difference between service and intrusion and knowing that the moments people remember are not necessarily those that could ever have been scheduled. 

What We Bring With Us

Sandringham Private Game Reserve’s story within the Sabi Sabi Collection is only beginning, yet it does so with almost half a century of experience behind it. It has its own history, ecological character and pace. Four rivers converge here, the Drakensberg appears along the distant horizon, and the restoration of the reserve is unfolding at a pace that cannot, and should not, be hurried.  

What has been learnt at Sabi Sabi over decades provides perspective, but not a template. Sandringham must be allowed to become itself. What carries across is an understanding that conservation rewards patience, that meaningful change is not immediate and that protecting a place requires decisions whose true value may only become apparent years later. 

The Life Of A House

Our Claremont Boutique Hotel presents yet another relationship with the past, one written into its architecture long before it became part of the Sabi Sabi Collection.

Designed in 1928 by Magdalena Sauer, one of South Africa’s first female architects, the original Manor House belongs to a period of Cape Town’s history that still reads in its proportions, details, and gracious relationship between interior rooms and gardens. Almost a century later, however, its appeal lies not in having been preserved as a perfect record of 1928, but in the fact that it has been given another life.

Heritage can become diminished when it is treated as something too precious to touch. A building survives because it continues to have purpose; a tradition survives because it remains relevant; knowledge survives because somebody finds it valuable enough to teach someone else. At The Claremont, a house conceived almost a century ago has entered another chapter, its original character providing the foundation rather than the limitation. 

Across the Sabi Sabi Collection, circumstances could hardly be more different. Yet each property asks the same question: how do we respect what came before while remaining entirely alive to the present?

From One Generation To The Next

Approaching fifty inevitably makes us conscious of time, but it does not make us particularly interested in predicting what the next fifty years might bring. The world will change in ways none of us can know, just as those who stood at the beginning of the Sabi Sabi story in 1979 could hardly have anticipated everything that followed.

Across Sabi Sabi, Sandringham and The Claremont, heritage takes many forms. In experience accumulated over decades, a wilderness being restored with the benefit of lessons already learnt, a historic house beginning another chapter and perhaps most importantly, the knowledge held by people who understand that its value increases when it is shared.

There will always be things worth changing, just as there will be things worth protecting. The wisdom lies in knowing the difference. And, when the time comes, in passing the right things on.
