After a fantastic sighting of the Kruger male lion, I decided that we needed to stop for a sundowner and try take in the incredible feeling after sharing an hour of our lives with him. I chose a drinks stop that I have never stopped at before - an open area with the golden yellow and tint of red African sun setting down the horizon.

The bush was silent and the next second all I heard was a deep squeal and a leopard alarm call. To our surprise, in the distance, were we able to see a male leopard getting chased up a tree by a massive and hungry lioness from the Southern Pride.

The thrill of the chase was on when the next moment everything went back to the silent setting we started on. We lost visual of the leopard and lioness and drove straight to the area where we had seen them.

On top of a huge and well used termite mound was a slight visual of the male leopard, and living up to his name, the “Ghost”, we were not able to see him clearly or take any photos but with the sounds of bones crushing, we knew that the lioness was up to something.

We scanned through the thick grass and seconds later all I heard was a loud and confident shout, “lion” from my tracker Richard. To our excitement, we found the lioness feeding on a warthog that was actually killed by the leopard and only then did I realise why he got chased up the tree.

My nerves were shot and it was all too much adrenaline for one day, but the breathtaking night ended off with this female feeding away then rapidly alarmed, as the Kruger male was roaring a few hundred meters away... will they join up tonight?
