Wining And Dining In The BBC Spotlight

on Dec 21, 2014

News update: 2nd June

The name Sabi Sabi has long been synonymous with excellent cuisine and fine wines. In the 1980's the lodges hosted their first series of gourmet weekends, bringing master chefs as guest cooks to prepare wonderful theme meals, while at the same time showcasing the best of South African wines. For many years since those memorable weekends, Sabi Sabi has boasted its own in-house master chef at each of our four lodges. Each of these fabulous chefs has his own distinct style and flair, but all create the finest dishes using the best of fresh local ingredients.

A testament to the superb cuisine prepared at Sabi Sabi was the recent visit to the reserve by the BBC's 'Cooked in Africa' television series. Celebrity chef and cookbook author Justin Bonello has been travelling around the country and cooking with the most celebrated chefs in South Africa, and Sabi Sabi participated in the cooking show, which will be aired on BBC later in the year. During the visit, which featured Earth Lodge, Bonello honed his skills with our Executive Chef and the two shared advice and cooking tips, to the delight of Earth Lodge guests.

Sabi Sabi is also well known for its excellent selection of both local and imported wines. Each lodge has an impressive wine and spirit collection: with Earth Lodge being home to a magnificent underground wine cellar that has over 6000 bottles of fine and rare wines.

In order to ably advise our guests, senior lodge staff undergo wine courses, and most recently, two members of the Sabi Sabi team, Lawrence Sihlangu and Million Khoza traveled to the heart of the South African wine industry to go through some specialized training. While there they spent time with fellow wine enthusiasts and had the opportunity of enjoying some sightseeing in the beautiful Cape surrounds.

Meals at Sabi Sabi are a sensory delight of taste buds and palate, with enthusiastic and trained staff always on hand to ensure that guests enjoy a delicious culinary experience.
