A true warrior

Franscois Rosslee Avoca 1 Of 1 Final

The face of a true warrior after chasing off some rival males in the area!

Taking photos at night can really be difficult and for some photographers, it’s a no go! But with all the new technology in our cameras, shooting at night is a pleasure as you get to see predators being very active.

This four-year-old male was following the scent of other lions when he stopped for a second and stared in the direction of the sound of hyenas calling in the distance.

The light was perfect on the side of the young male’s face and my camera setting was perfect. I got the eyes open which plays a very important role in photographing these cats as they have incredible yellow eyes.

Equipment used

  • Camera – Canon 7D Mkii
  • Lens and Focal length – Sigma 150-600mm F5 – 6.3 DG @484mm

Settings used to capture this image

  • ISO – 2500
  • Aperture – F 6.3
  • Shutter – 1/100

In Lightroom I used Vignetting just to darken some of the grasses that were sticking out on the sides and then I dropped my shadows to -100 and lifted my whites and gave it a little bit of contrast.

This is possibly one of my favourite night shots of a lion!
