At the end of the day, whether it's summer, autumn, spring or winter, something magical happens - it’s almost as if the sky opens and shows its true beauty... a sunset.

When I think about sunsets, there is one sunset in particular that I will never forget.

It was a much-needed end to a very hot day, one of the hottest of the year so far. Following a few days of rain, the air was clean, all the dust had settled, and everything was perfect.

As the temperature started to drop, the clouds began to change colour, and soon the entire sky began to change colour from this incredible blue to a mixture of blue, red, orange and yellow and as the sun slowly set, the colours grew brighter and within a matter of minutes, the entire sky has erupted with these warm colours it was incredible. I keep trying to think of a way to explain what it looked like and all I can think of is an explosion of colour in the sky.

On that particular afternoon, it so happens to be that we were enjoying the company of a pride of lions resting in some shade near a waterhole and in the back of my mind I was just picturing the whole scene unfolding with the water, sunset and the lions but what was in store for us that afternoon was better than I could ever imagine.

As the sun set behind the mountains a herd of elephants appeared out of the thickets below the waterhole and made their way to drink. This got the attention of the lions, and for those few moments where the lions were watching the elephants, everything was perfect - lions sitting up watching elephants drink and an incredible sunset behind all of it. This I do believe is the best way to end a day.

Sunsets to me resemble the end of a day and the soon to be beginning of a new day. No matter what the day brought, all it takes is a few moments to stop and watch and it’s like magic - a sense of calm, like time, has slowed down almost to a stop, and for those brief moments taking in the colours, the shapes of the clouds and the last warmth of the daytime seem to stand still, and everything is beautiful.
