Playdate

Kerry Lee Roberg Rhino Calf Final

After thousands of incredible sightings, this is one that will always stand out for me.

Early one morning, whilst the sun was slowly rising, warming the bitterly cold winter air, we came across this large female White Rhino resting and were surprised and excited to discover she had her young calf by her side. The small rhinoceros had no interest in sleeping, as we approached she seemed to think we were her next play date. The calf proceeded to race and hop around, running up and down the sandy firebreak shrouding us in dust as she sped toward us before coming to an abrupt stop each time. After realizing her new play-mate was very motionless, she retreated to her mother’s side and made attempts to rouse the gentle giant.

Equipment used:

  • Camera – Nikon D7200
  • Lens – Sigma 150-600 contemporary lens

Settings used:

  • ISO – 3200
  • Aperture – f6,3
  • Shutter – 1/640

Editing used on this image:

I didn’t do too much editing here, I increased the contrast and clarity as there was a lot of dust which created haze. I also increased the intensity of the shadows.
