The Rhino’s Plight

For my first ever “pic of the week” I have chosen a photo which technically speaking is not the best photo I have ever taken, I have chosen this photo because of the emotional attachment behind it.

We all know that Rhinos have been in the news for the past few years or so as the number of slain animals has risen to approximately 7 200... just throughout South Africa over the past decade. Sabi Sabi is lucky to have an amazing team working tirelessly to protect the Rhinos which unfortunately is absolutely necessary all over Africa, but how exactly did these gentle giants become just a statistic?

Rhinoceros’ are living, feeling beings. They communicate with each other, protect one another and seek company from time to time. These prehistoric animals have evolved from having woolly coats millions of years ago, they have adapted to live in ever changing climates thus allowing them to see out era after era and yet here in the year 2018 the Rhino faces extinction by the hands of man.

A Rhino is so much more than a statistic, it is so much more than its horn. The appendage which it is brutally murdered for holds NO medicinal value as some believe. It is part of the Rhinos anatomy for a reason... a Rhino is the ONLY being that needs it – for protection.

In this image a male Rhino is captured with a seeping eye, presumably due to some kind of irritation, yet the animal appears defeated. I have purposefully de-saturated only the Rhinoceros to symbolise their plight and to show that if people are not educated and the word is not spread now, our Rhinos are going to devastatingly be a thing of the past.
