The Lowveld is an amazing place and it is incredible to witness the changes from the mild winter to the lavish and ever so green summer months. I thought I would share some of it with you.

Let's start with winter. I am going to add a few pictures, as sometimes words cannot quite describe the difference. From May through to August winter is at Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve. When looking at the landscape it is hard to believe such an abundance of life can live in the area. One of the first things that is mentioned by the guests on their arrival is "WOW it looks like a desert and it is so dry, are we going to see any animals?" In winter with no rains, all the vegetation starts to dry out and fade away almost looking like a waste land.

With all the grasses and trees bare, the animals are brought closer and closer together with not much cover to hide or conceal them. This brings with it both positives and negatives to both predator and prey. With predators not having cover in which to ambush and hide, their prey can spot them easily. The lack of food around makes the prey very weak thus easier to catch.

Both winter and summer months have their various attractions when deciding on when to travel to Sabi Sabi on safari. Winter months are drier with cold mornings and evenings and very mild days. Clear skies allow for fantastic stargazing opportunities. Summer months see the bush transform into a blanket of green with lush grasses in all shades, blooming flowers, new life running around from the birthing season and the amazingly colourful summer migrant birds coming down to nest and breed.
