year end message 2012

news update: 13th december

We end this year on a high note, having recently been named Africa's best safari lodge by Conde Nast Traveler, as well as being voted one of the Top 6 Luxury Hotels worldwide and Top 10 Hotels for food experience. Additionally, Sabi Sabi was listed in Travel + Leisure Magazine's World Top 20 rankings and also featured in the World's Best Family Destinations. These accolades are a great acknowledgement of our entire staff's commitment to giving guests a world class experience in our unique atmosphere of warm, African hospitality. Thanks go to the Sabi Sabi family here and across the globe for all their efforts. To those guests who visited us this year, by the end of your stay you had become part of our extended family. By sharing so many of your experiences within your circle and with the world at large, you enabled us to achieve these phenomenal accolades. Thank you for your support.

None of these incredible awards would be possible without the continuing conservation of our unique environment - and for conservation to remain successful one needs vision! More than 30 years ago Hilton and Jacqui Loon had a dream, the idea of transforming the Sabi Sabi reserve into a luxury safari destination, while at the same time preserving this natural environment and its unparalleled biodiversity of habitat. Their dream has been realised, continues to evolve and ensures that the legacy of the Sabi Sabi Game Reserve will extend long into the future as an unspoilt heritage for future generations.

The success of 2012 and the honours bestowed on our lodges this year were a great gift to Hilton Loon who celebrated his 70th birthday in early November surrounded by his family and closest friends. Current Sabi Sabi staff members as well as previous staff from the last three decades who still remain in close contact, sent Hilton warm and heartfelt birthday wishes.

We recently had the pleasure of hosting our annual staff year end function at which we recognised those people who have worked at Sabi Sabi for 10, 20 and even 30 years. These are marvellous milestones, and are a measure of the great loyalty of the wonderful people of Sabi Sabi. Our staff work long hours, attending to guests with unfailing warmth and hospitality, and it was time for us to mirror their roles: - they became our guests for a day. At this annual function we celebrate the year's successes, rejoice in the service tributes we have received and this year we gave out our first ever 30 year Long Service Awards. Both Elliot Ngiba (Senior Ranger at Bush Lodge) and Lizbeth Mhlongo (Curio Shop Manager at Bush Lodge) have been with Sabi Sabi for 3 decades. We are honoured to have presented these awards, and are delighted by how proud Elliot, Lizbeth and all their peers were of this wonderful achievement. We wish them many more successful years with the company.
