Week in the Bush Vol. 81

on Dec 10, 2015

Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn!

This week has been an absolute pleasure to be out in this natural environment. With all the rain that we have had everything is just in an absolute blossoming mood.

We can really be thankful for all the leopard sightings that we had, it’s been so busy I don’t know where to start...

Well let’s start with the two newest members of the leopard family here at Sabi Sabi - Little Bush’s cubs. It seems like they have already developed quite a personality and have settled in with us all, they are digging deep into our hearts at an early stage and all that we can hope for is that Little Bush can keep them safe for the next year and that Maxabeni will be around a lot more to make sure no new males start pushing in and try to kill these two beautiful cubs. Little Bush’s daughter, Kigelia, was also sighted and she is growing into a beautiful leopard!

It’s been great to see Maxabeni around more often and he is just bulking out more muscle every day. He is really going to make every single male leopard’s life very difficult that tries to come into his area which is a good thing as there are a few of his offspring around right now.

The other day Maxabeni gave us a great show as he stalked some impala close to our safari vehicles, giving us the perfect opportunity to see this magnificent cat up close and personal.

White Dam female and her cub have also been very kind in giving us some great viewing opportunities. She led us straight to an impala kill the other day, with her cub, which is a lot more relaxed now than before. At the kill it was as if we were not even there and they both enjoyed their prize. She is turning out to be a great mother to this little one.

The legend that is Nottins, is still alive and well despite disappearing for days or weeks at a time, but when we do see her, she returns with a bang! She is still a beautiful cat, showing us her beauty from every possible angle. She climbs trees like a one-year-old cub, and really just shows off her natural agility and beauty. One thing for sure, she is a true legend and we hope that she continues to live the rest of her life to the maximum!

The lions seems to be doing well. We have been seeing the bigger Charleston male with the females often and the other brother is still focused on his Aunt with her two cubs to the east of us, but he still comes for a visit every so often and we get to photograph his new signature. With the disappearance of the two Fourways males, we hope these two brothers are here to stay.

As always, it’s been really amazing to see some of the smaller Big 5 out there – such as elephant calves! These calves always steal the hearts of our guests as they try and figure out how to use the long attachment to their face, the trunk!! Always very entertaining to watch!
