Monochrome Monday #23

“There are no rules for good photographs, there are only good photographs.” - Ansel Adams

Too often people are caught up on what settings to use in particular situations and rules when photographing wildlife. To me the right settings, lighting conditions, composition and so forth all matter, but at times I do not stress about these factors and rather capture the moment, letting my subjects ‘do the talking’.

MM011

I will miss photographing this special leopard, the Sandriver male. His milky eye always added something extra to a photograph and made him look much fiercer than other males.

MM021

A wild dog and zebra look eye-to-eye for a brief moment before the wild dog makes a quick escape.

MM031

A male hippo surfaces from the bottom of a dam, showing us his immense size.

MM041

An old warrior takes to a mud wallow to cool down during the heat of the day.

MM051

Usually not the most photogenic animals, but this black and white conversion of a Blue wildebeest works quite well.

MM061

A Sand River male lion yawns, bearing his impressive set of canines.

MM071

A wary male cheetah looks back before he approaches a waterhole to drink.

MM081

A young elephant bulls feeds amongst a herd of Blue wildebeest.

MM091

A giraffe licks his lips dry after having a quick drink.

MM101

A Spotted hyena turns back to pose for a second. One does not get a chance very often to photograph a hyena standing still when they up and about, so I was lucky when this one stood still for a second.
