Despite us all having to settle into a new normal caused by an uninvited guest – COVID-19, we are thrilled that many countries and economies are slowly moving toward re-opening – even the tourism industry is slowly anticipating a much-needed breath of life. While we are cautiously excited about this, we do not want to lose an important opportunity to reflect.
As a business on the frontline, we have taken the time to reflect on our journey over the last 40 years and how the current state of affairs impacts our plans for the future. Having overcome profound challenges in becoming who we are today, we take solace that in all this chaos there is yet again opportunity for hope towards a brighter future.
Early on, we recognised that the wilderness is a myriad of interconnected ecosystems that offer an extraordinary perspective on life. It’s impossible not to appreciate our existence as human beings when the delicate balance between life and death is evident in every part of our reserve. For over four decades we have witnessed experiences that have given us a glimpse into the fragility of life. While often hard to witness, we do understand that these are part of the harsh realities of nature and the circle of life and provided us with a deeper insight into spirituality and living with purpose. With this fundamental understanding, Sabi Sabi has always had the passion and desire to create holistic and impactful experiences that plant the seeds of hope and transformation in the minds of our guests.
We spend our days attempting to learn the secrets of the natural world and mastering the art of finding balance with nature, while sharing these experiences with our guests. We believe the source of our success is intimately linked to our sincere respect for and alignment with nature.
With this in mind, the devastation brought on by COVID-19 has re-confirmed that in some parts of the world biospheres are approaching their ‘tipping point’, imminently set to be tilted out of equilibrium. Humanity has long perceived nature as an element to be conquered instead of understanding that we are just a minute part of the natural world – and at its mercy. We should perceive nature as a source of inspiration and intelligence and allow it to become a guiding force for humanity. We as a global society need to strive towards strengthening our connections with nature, in harmony with Mother Earth.
Our organisation is centred around the progress towards balance within our natural environments. We see this as our purpose and it’s been a privilege to have been able to learn from and protect the “Greater Sabi Sabi” area throughout the years. The harmonious integration into our broader surroundings and local communities has been a natural extension of our sustainable investment in this part of our beloved South Africa. The crucial pillars of conservation, ecotourism and community have enabled us to deliver on meaningful experiences that our guests have come to love and cherish for decades.
The current situation is the best time to reflect and look forward. The silver lining is in the opportunity for change, to learn from these events and draw inspiration from nature. This epidemic will teach us many lessons, one being the need to build sustainable societies which treat nature with respect.
Central to Sabi Sabi’s core is creating a paradigm shift that effectively aligns nature, community and commercial activity. Over the years we have gained many hard-fought lessons and it is now more than ever that we look forward to a future where we continue to inspire our guests to connect with nature and progressively shift focus toward sustainable practices. We see a world where sustainability is at the forefront of decision-making and we want to play our part in acting as a role model for other organisations and the world.
It’s clear that our mission is greater than just being a tourism organisation, we want to build a sustainable future by creating experiences and instil knowledge that inspires advancement. We know that this can only be done with you, our guests (Sabi Sabi family), and we look forward to experiencing the joy of the wilderness with you in the near future.
