A Week in the Bush Vol. 266

on Jul 17, 2019

Welcome to the next edition of “A Week in the Bush”. It’s been a bag of mixed sightings this week with some days quieter than others, but each sighting special and interesting in its own way – be it a bird sighting or that of one of the Big 5.

Being winter, and our dry season, animals have been frequenting the many waterholes located throughout our reserve and constantly on the move in search for food.

We were witness to an awesome sighting as a mother hyena returned to the den site with an impala carcass for the cubs to feed off. What unfolded before us was incredible as she defended the carcass against the low-ranking hyenas in the clan.

We continue to enjoy regular sightings of the Southern Pride and the two “new” young male members who seem to have settled with the pride.

We followed the Scotia female leopard as she moved around marking her territory.

After a lengthy period of tracking, we found Ntsumi stalking an unsuspecting herd of impala, but she was not successful in her attempt during our time spent with her.

Xovonekela was seen patrolling his territory that is slowly being diminished due to increasing pressure from younger, stronger males in the area.

The White Dam male led us through some thick bush to where he had stashed a bushbuck kill not too far from Little Bush Camp.

We found the Msuthlu female leopard who seems to be lactating with visible suckle marks. We are not too sure where her cub/s might be, but this is something exciting to look forward to in the future.

We spent some time with Kigelia as she was trying her luck with a bachelor herd of impala, but she rather opted for laying down in a shallow drainage line.

Maxabeni was also seen this week as he stalked a bachelor herd of impala, but unfortunately for the leopard, was unsuccessful.

We caught up with a pack of Wild Dogs as they started their afternoon activities which included catching a Scrub Hare for a snack and getting chased around by a very distraught herd of elephants.
