A Week in the Bush Vol. 229

on Oct 17, 2018

It’s been another wonderful week on safari! We hope you enjoy the highlights of the past 7 days at Sabi Sabi...

We came across a Secretary bird seemingly interested in having a monitor lizard for breakfast but never really got too close. The monitor was a decent size and a whip from its powerful tail will leave a mark. The Secretary bird soon gave up and headed off in search of an easier meal.

Ostrich were spotted regularly this week on the open plains in the north of our reserve. It’s always exciting to see the biggest bird in the world.

Rangers and trackers have a special bond with each other, constantly helping and learning from each other. Trackers are great at spotting game, and their eyes pic up on the smallest details. Here Sydney saw a scorpion hiding in the tree’s bark while out on night drive.

Golden hour in the bush is a special and beautiful time of day. This youngster was very inquisitive and showed a great deal of interest Ally’s tracker.

Elephants have extremely thick hides, as thick as 3cm's. Here one can see the beautiful texture of the large mammal’s skin... heavily wrinkled and creased.

Various species visited the numerous waterholes located throughout our reserve allowing for some wonderful sightings. The weekend brought with it some cooler, rainy conditions which was welcomed by all!

Whenever we see wild dog on the reserve, we know we are in for an action-packed sighting and this week we were treated to numerous sightings of this endangered species.

In addition to the dogs, we have seen numerous cats over the past 7 days...

The White Dam male and his father, Maxabeni, were seen regularly – out on the prowl looking for something to eat and marking their territory.

We had a very brief sighting of the young Hanyile male who wondered on to our Southern property of Lisbon.

After losing out on her hard-earned impala kill earlier in the week, Ntsumi was seen trying her luck again as she used a pushed over tree and a termite mound to plan her ambush on a herd of impala.

Another male we have been seeing more regularly, N’weti, was around a lot this week.

Towards the end of last week, we came across the Southern Pride close to Earth Lodge. They had made a kill and were feeding on their prize, a kudu bull, but tensions ran high as it was every lion for itself whilst feeding. A committee of Vultures, including White-backed and Hooded vultures waited around in the surrounding trees.

Until next time...
