A Week in the Bush Vol. 219

on Aug 08, 2018

What a week it has been!!! Plenty of amazing sightings and lots to recap on this week. Enjoy...

The Little Bush female has been seen a lot this week and rewarded our early mornings with some spectacular sightings of her.

Her daughter, the young Ntsumi female, was having some hyena trouble earlier this week as they continuously disturbed her while she was finishing off her duiker kill... well... what was left of it after the hyenas had stolen most if it! Later in the week she had a failed hunting attempt on a herd of impala so rested whilst keeping a close eye on the herd.

Maxabeni managed to secure himself a rather large meal in the form of a kudu! He was absolutely exhausted from the kill, and understandably so... We watched as he dragged his prize whilst looking for a suitable tree in which to hoist it. Unfortunately for the large male, he chose the wrong tree and his Monday turned out to be a blue one. Not only was his daughter, Ntsumi, stealing bits of his kill when he rested, but hyenas eventually moved in and stole it. A couple of days later, we watched as he stalked and caught a scrub hare, finishing it off in next to no time.

The majestic White Dam male walked through his father’s territory on a cloudy afternoon. He seemed to be in search of a meal, possibly warthog, as he was observed moving from burrow to burrow.

Wrapping up this week’s leopard highlights, the young N’weti male was found with a rather full stomach and in desperate need of water. Later on, he was seen hunting impala until Maxabeni blew his cover and chased him off.

A pack of Wild Dogs have been seen regularly this week, with two of the females showing signs of being pregnant.

We have enjoyed many sightings of other safari favourites as well as some beautiful birdlife...

We end this week’s highlights blog with news on the young Mhangeni Pride. These 7 young sub-adult lions were following a huge herd of buffalo that was passing through and as soon as darkness struck, they were on the move. They went for a large female buffalo, but as buffaloes do, the rest of her family turned on the lions and were quick to form a rescue mission and save the female, injuring one of the young male lions in the process. The young male was later seen licking his wounds, maybe more a hit to his ego than anything else...

The following morning, they attempted to hunt some Blue Wildebeest but were also unsuccessful.

Until next time...
