A Week in the Bush Vol. 216

on Jul 18, 2018

We hope you enjoy this week’s highlights from the past 7 days on safari...

The week started with a sighting of the Msuthlu female as she was seen feeding on her young impala ram kill. After a couple of days of feeding, her focus shifted to some warthogs passing by.

She may not have had any luck in adding warthog to her menu, but Maxabeni did... He was seen consuming his son’s kill, with the young male left empty handed, watching from below. We ended the week with a sighting of the young male waiting patiently outside a warthog’s burrow where he’d chased a warthog into in the hope it will re-emerge...

Xovonekela made an appearance and was looking very satisfied as he lay flat, digesting his latest meal.

The young Kigelia female also had success as she lay asleep in some dense vegetation seeking cover from the cold wind, whilst keeping one eye on her kill stashed up a nearby tree.

The Southern Pride duo continue to flourish! They have been successful in securing regular meals for themselves and are looking to be in tip-top condition! We watched them as they took on a herd of buffalo, with their focus on an injured calf, but the herd soon caught sight of them and came in to protect their own. After numerous attempts, the lions retreated to safety as their element of surprise had been blown.

Not so lucky – the 9 members of the Mhangeni Pride. These young lions have been struggling to make a successful hunt which is big enough to satisfy so many bellies. We hope their luck will soon change as there are some large herds of buffalo on the reserve currently – a decent size meal for the pride.

As always, it’s not all about the “Big 5” or “Magnificent 7” – we offer a holistic safari experience and enjoy spending good time with all the other animals, birds and creatures we get to see here on a daily basis.

We end this week’s highlights blog with a sighting of a pack of wild dogs scouting an area for a meal. A couple of the females are pregnant, which in its own is incredible news for this endangered species. We will wait to see where they decide to den and hope to enjoy many special sightings of some pups.

Until next time...
