A Week in the Bush Vol. 133

on Dec 15, 2016

We had a bit of cuteness to start the week off with – a hyena den with 2 very tiny cubs!

Big 5 and general game sightings have been in abundance again this week with a mixed bag of sightings from insects to birds to antelope to elephants and not forgetting the cats...

It was quite unusual to see this young male elephant and a buffalo bull sharing this small mud wallow, without any drama between the two as both can be quite possessive at times.

Moving on to the cats...

Earlier this week we came across the Southern Pride and 8 cubs all looking rather thin. Their luck took a turn for the better and they managed to take down a young male buffalo, thanks to the experience of Mandleve/Floppy Ear. They also managed to take down another buffalo towards the end of the week.

News in this week from the Ranger’s is that the Southern Pride lionesses the split from the pride, has given birth. She is lactating which is great news for us but due to the cubs possibly being no older than 2 weeks, we will not be viewing them, nor the den site until they get a bit older. We therefore cannot confirm how many cubs there are but she is making use of a den site which the females have used in the past. This female remains active in assisting with hunts as seen in Kevan’s recent video of her jumping on the back of the buffalo in the Southern Pride’s latest kill. Southern Pride – buffalo kill.

We have enjoyed some welcome cooler weather, as well as more rainfall. Here the cubs were all huddled together to keep warm one morning.

White Dam and her male cub have treated us to some amazing sightings again this week. They were on an impala kill earlier this week and shared a few tender moments which leads us to believe that her cub still has a while to go before he leaves his mother. Towards the end of the week we witnessed a hyena steal one of their kills as the cub was caught napping...

Kigelia female was seen with Kashane male as he made his way deep into Maxabeni’s territory. It is unlikely that Kigelia and Kashane mated as she was alone the next morning and he was nowhere to be seen.

We hope you have enjoyed this week’s highlights as much as we have enjoyed being out in the field sharing these special sightings with our Guests.
