safari bush sightings
WOW! What an amazing afternoon safari. During the drive we had had some unbelievable sightings and the guests had been full of excitement. As we know, all good things have to come to an end, and as the day turned into night we started to head home. En route back to our lodge there was a lot of activity on the radio, conversations about high profile sightings. We were still pretty far from the camp so I made the decision not to head straight back, and to add a little more game viewing.
Well, just as I thought the day couldn't get any better, the next sighting that came over the radio just threw me. Richard, my fellow ranger, had found a pangolin on an open area. As I explained to my guests, a pangolin is an extremely rare and skittish nocturnal animal. I started to make my way to the sighting pumped full of excitement.
On arrival at the area, we found the pangolin right in the middle of the road. It was curled up into such a tight ball that its protective amour was all we could see. Soon after I stepped out of the vehicle to explain more to the guests about this elusive creature, it became mobile. The only way I can describe its movement is by saying it looked like an armored tank, just bulldozing its way through the grass with an unbelievable amount of power. We were really amazed by the strength of this small animal.
A lot of guests and even rangers had never seen a pangolin before, and it soon became the highlight of the evening safari. We all took our photos and headed home, allowing others a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Thanks to an amazing creature, my afternoon safari went from good to great to absolutely UNBELIEVEABLE!!!!
