Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve - nominated in three categories for the Imvelo Awards for responsible tourism - has won the award for best practice in water conservation.

The Imvelo (Zulu for "nature") Awards form part of the Hospitality Industry Campaign for Responsible Tourism run under the auspices of FEDHASA. The campaign encourages local hospitality members to accept voluntary guidelines that promote responsible tourism in all areas of operation.

Sabi Sabi managing director, Patrick Shorten comments: "Given the critical shortage of water on the African continent - at least seven countries in sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing famine due to drought - we recognised the need to implement responsible and sustainable water conservation systems.

"As with all Sabi Sabi conservation initiatives, our water programme has been developed in consultation with the local community, taking into account our unique environment and marrying the best in world class standards with appropriate technology for a developing area."

He says the Imvelo Award, along with Sabi Sabi's other Imvelo nominations, including for best overall practice, proves that it is possible to combine the ultimate in luxury with a responsible approach to the environment.

"Sabi Sabi has received many local and international awards" for its accommodation, game viewing, cuisine and overall experience. The Imvelo water conservation award now demonstrates to guests that their visit to the bush not only has minimal impact, but in fact has a positive influence on the area," concludes Shorten.

The private game reserve has invested millions of Rands in the past few years to implement environmental systems, training programmes and local community initiatives. Local community members from neighbouring Lillydale and Huntingdon, are engaged in all sustainability programmes, which are backed up with education and training.

As a member of the Sabi Sand Reserve, Sabi Sabi subscribes to its stringent environmental and conservation ethics, ensuring that there is a legacy for local communities for the future.

"We are in this for the long-term, and as such must ensure that what we do today lays the foundation for future generations."

"Sabi Sabi holds the AA Accommodation Award for Best establishment in South Africa, was named one of 50 international hot spots by Conde Naste Traveler (US) and Sabi Sabi's Earth Lodge was the first Game Lodge in South Africa to be awarded 5-star rating under the Tourism Grading Council of SA's new stars grading system.
