sabi sabi ranger gallery: jabu mathe
Jabu is one of very few people who can say he truly followed in his father's footsteps. Jabu grew up in the Sabi Sands Reserve while his father worked as a tracker for Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve.
In 1982 Jabu's father passed away, leaving his son to take care of the family. In honour of his father Sabi Sabi took the Mathe family under their wing and offered Jabu employment.
Fresh out of school his first job was a gardener, but Jabu quickly showed his potential and soon began training as a waiter. The young Jabu was, however, determined to follow in his father's footsteps, and used his spare time to gain more knowledge about the bushveld.
After just two years at Sabi Sabi he stepped into a well-deserved new role, qualifying as a Level 1 and 2 tracker. After several more years of proving himself in this position, in 1993 Jabu was promoted to ranger. He is now a fully qualified FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) level 1 guide with a Trails back qualification.
The bush is a huge part of Jabu's being, and has been all his life. If asked he would say that he loves everything about the bush and is a very keen birder - but his years of experience have made him an absolute specialist in tracking.
