Wild Facts

Wild about... Giraffes
  • Wild about... Giraffes
  • 1. The tallest of all land animals, Giraffes can stand up to 5.5m high and weigh up to one and a half tonnes.
  • 2. Both male and female Giraffes have horns, with females distinguishable by hairy tufts on the top the horns, which in males are worn down by fighting.
  • 3. Giraffes defend themselves from predators - mainly Lions - by kicking with their hind legs. One on-target blow from a Giraffe's hind legs can shatter a Lion's skull.
  • 4. Giraffes require very little sleep - less than two hours in any 24-hour period - and generally sleep standing up.
  • 5. At Sabi Sabi... While the Giraffe's size usually means it is only hunted by Lion prides, recently at Sabi Sabi a juvenile Giraffe was killed and dragged up a tree by a male Leopard.
