A Week in the Bush Vol. 62

on Jul 30, 2015

As another week comes to a close, we look back at some amazing sightings that we got to experience and a sample of some of the stunning photos captured by our Rangers.

Sadly the love affair between the Fourways males and one of the Southern Pride females came to an end. The boys, who had then separated and spent some time apart, eventually reunited and confirmed their bond. Even though it was the end, hopefully it will lead to the beginning... The beginning of the rebuilding stage of the Southern Pride to bring it back to its former glory. The answers to all these questions we will find out in time.

We have certainly been fortunate recently with our leopard sightings, especially with the females showing off their posing abilities.

We start with a seasoned campaigner in the posing department, the Lisbon female. A leopard in a Marula tree in winter is one of the best photographic opportunities a guide and guest could ask for. To be honest, I was very jealous not being in this sighting with my favourite leopardess. However, Kosie, Pravir and Courtney did a great job with these pics.

Lisbon has not outrightly won the poser of the week award, Little Bush`s youngster, the Kigelia female, is certainly a worthy challenger with these photos.

All the while, we certainly know where Kigelia gets her posing ability from in this picture below of her father Maxabeni.

He has a presence about him that oozes confidence, power and assertiveness - everything you would expect from a dominant male with a large territory.

Leopards have not been the only spotted cats seen on the reserve. The Rangers put in a determined tracking exercise but it was certainly worth it when they found the elusive cheetah.

The Wild Dogs have also been visiting us, with trying to keep up with them being the tough part. This time they relaxed a little to allow Kosie to get some great shots of these magnificent animals.

Our elephant sightings have been brilliant recently with large herds moving through the reserve in search of water. This season has been extremely dry so far but seeing these large herds is a small cancelation.

The stars this week however goes to the Fourways males. It has been great to see these boys get more confident in their new found territory. They have been trailing a large herd of buffalo this week and had some unsuccessful hunts but also some successful ones. Here are some pics where they were able to take down a young calf during the early afternoon.

The beauty about the bush is that no day is the same and who knows what great pictures will be showcased on next week’s highlights.
