A Week in the Bush: vol 56

on Jun 18, 2015

As another week comes to a close we recap on what a great week it’s been and the Sabi Sabi rangers share their favourite pictures.

We have had some brilliant sunrises and sunsets recently. The winter months provide stunning light allowing for great pictures like this.

The elephant sightings this week have been amazing as large herds move between the vital water sources around the reserve. However the highlight was seeing the blue-eyed elephant, who has grown a lot since last seen.

The Toulon Pack of wild dogs have been paying us some visits of late, often hunting on the open areas in the very early morning and late evening.

A coalition of two young male cheetahs passed through the reserve, trailed by a hyena who clearly knew that if a kill was made he would have the opportunity of an easy meal.

We have had some great leopard sightings this week. Xovonekela has been regularly patrolling the northern part of his territory, scent marking in an attempt to keep Maxabeni from going south into his territory.

Little Bush`s cub was found the other afternoon trying her hand at hunting members of a buffalo herd numbering approximately 1000 individuals. She certainly has her father, Maxabeni`s determination, but let’s hope she learns quickly that this may been just a step too far.

Warthog Wallow was found drinking at the waterhole in front of Bush Lodge and then led us to a kill not far away.

She was also found one evening wandering within the grounds of Bush Lodge.

White Dam has been spending some time on the reserve and doing a great job in raising her two demanding cubs who still remain quite elusive. She is ever the opportunist and takes every chance to hunt.

The 6 Southern Pride females have been elusive but reappeared at the end of the week and looking very healthy. They have still been keeping their distance from the Sand River males whose dominance of the Southern section is being challenged by the Fourways males.

We started this week’s review with a lovely sunset, so it’s fitting to finish it off with a picture of the beautiful starry sky. The winter nights are so clear and provide a wonderful opportunity to view the constellations providing a great addition to the safari experience.
