a week in the bush: vol 49

Terry Ennever Freedom Day

During a week, when one of our days was Freedom day, we reflect back on an awesome time in the bush with some of our favourite pictures.

We will start with the largest land mammal. There has been numerous sightings of both large herds of Elephants and Elephant bulls this week despite the ending of the Marula season a couple months earlier. The recent, much needed rains have filled the pans which large elephant bulls like this one have enjoyed.

We were also very fortunate to have some great sightings of the two members that make up "The Magnificent Seven"-the Cheetah and the Wild Dog.

This Cheetah enjoyed a nice drink before temporarily being disrupted by a Saddle billed Stork who decided to change its landing spot when it witnessed the Cheetah at its intended destination.

The Toulon Pack, suggesting that she is carving out a new territory in order to make space for her of Wild Dogs paid us a visit providing much excitement for the guests who had the opportunity to witness this endangered species up close and personal. The alpha female is heavily pregnant and I’m sure they will be actively looking for a den site before she gives birth.

The Little Bush female has been actively pushing into the Nottins female`s territory, suggesting that she is carving out a new territory in order to accomodate her cubs fast approaching independence.

The Southern Pride females and the Southern Pride split being seen together at regular intervals. During their time together they have reaffirmed family bonds and are looking extremely healthy. I’m sure it won’t be long till we do away with the Southern Pride split tag as it looks like they are planning to rebuild the empire of the Southern Pride to what it was in their peak.

All of this will hinge on how they react when they come into contact with the three Sandriver Males who the girls have been avoiding for some time.

The Story of the Sandriver Males could not be more different than the Southern Pride Lionesses, reports of infighting within the coalition and two of them exhibiting harsh wounds from an unknown source, it seems as if the coalition is imploding but the resilience of these boys is incredible. However with the young fourways boys pushing in from the North, could make for interesting times.

The story of the week goes to a huge fight that was witnessed by our guests between dominant male Maxabeni and the young Tortillis male. An interaction which left all breathless as Maxabeni pinned down the Tortillis Male and inflicting some wounds on his side. We have not seen the Tortillis male since but expect he is still alive and laying low.

He did not go down without a fight, he gave as good as he got leaving Maxabeni with a very swollen left eye and a claw in his right cheek.

As another adventurous week ends another begins and no doubts we will have some more amazing pics from our team in the bush next week
