A Week in the Bush Vol. 166

on Aug 02, 2017

We had an exciting start to the week when Earth Lodge staff and guests had a very welcome, yet unexpected sighting.... On the roof!!!

Large herds of elephants continue to move around the reserve, allowing for some spectacular interactions between the members, from big and old to small and young.

A special sighting, and something we don’t see every day – mating Grey Herons!

We had 4-seasons-in-one-week this week with high day time temperatures, cold night time temperatures and even a bit of rain but that didn’t stop this pair of African Green Pigeons from getting themselves well positioned to warm up in the rising sun.

The “loved-up” leopard sightings from last week were fewer this week as the White Dam male began to mark territory. Little Bush continued to pursue him but she backed off after a serious altercation between the two leaving the female with a gash on her right side.

Maxabeni was on his routine territorial marking and gave our guests some wonderful photographic opportunities. He was also recently in a fight with an unknown younger male leaving him with a few new bumps and bruises.

Kigelia female was also seen this week, perched atop a tree after which she came down and attempted hunting a duiker but with no luck.

The Tsalala males have been seen a lot this week since taking down a buffalo right near the entrance to Bush Lodge. This attracted many scavengers such as Spotted Hyena and Hooded Vultures, making for some very interesting sightings.

Luck has not been with the Southern Pride as they are still in search of a big meal. They missed an opportunity earlier this week when one of the cubs gave away their presence during a hunt. A hard-learnt lesson.

Until next time...
