A Week in the Bush Vol. 165

on Jul 26, 2017

Love is in the air with more than one pair of leopards seen mating over the past week. We hope this brings with it some cubs in a couple of months’ time.

Having said this, the White Dam male could be treading on thin ice as he’s currently mating with the Little Bush female, within his father, Maxabeni’s territory! This may not end well for the young male should Maxabeni show up. This could result in the White Dam male being chased off and forced to secure his own territory, and new females.

The second pair of leopards seen mating are Kashane and Kigelia. We really hope Kigelia is able to conceive this time and we look forward to watching her bring up her cubs. She was very well raised by her mother, the Little Bush female, and we hope she will be as successful as her mother has been.

A sighting that set our rangers and guests abuzz on Sunday night was an amazing sighting of a pangolin! This is certainly not something you get to see often and something on a lot of people’s bucket list of animals to see! What a privilege!!

We have had some large breeding herds of elephants moving through the reserve and enjoyed some lovely sightings of them as their excitement peaked at the sight of water!

In a tense sighting, we were witness to a group of 7 hyenas who came across an injured buffalo bull near a waterhole. They took their chances on him but fortunately for the bull, he was still too strong for the hyenas and lived another day...

A fair female kudu stood lit beautifully in a sea of golden winter grass as her sisters moved into a thicket nearby.

A Lilac-breasted Roller and a Grey Go-away bird sat perched high up a tree, warming up in the early morning sun.

We were very lucky to be able to spend some time with a Giant Eagle Owl in broad daylight!

We had a couple of sightings of the Southern Pride who were following the scent of a herd of buffalo but they couldn’t keep up and rested in some shade. In another sighting, the cubs were in a rambunctious mood and tested their take-down skills on each other as well as the adult females which was met with some hostility.

Last, but not least, we had a sighting of the three Tsalala males early one morning as they were roaring. They were located in no-man’s land and in a territory unclaimed by other males. Could they be claiming this territory and in search of some females...?

This week has been jam-packed and we look forward to what the coming week brings!!

Until next time...
