Pic Of The Week #25

on May 12, 2017

A rhino silhouette

Kyle Rhino With Sun 2 Final

We had this awesome sighting of a White Rhino in an open area during the dry season and as it walked, I noticed all the dust the Rhino was kicking up as it moved on to feed. I then moved to the opposite side of the Rhino (shooting into the sun) and having photographers on my vehicle who wanted to try something different, we waited for the sun to drop a bit lower creating these beautiful colours.

Equipment used

  • Camera – Canon 7D MKii
  • Lens and focal length - Canon 100-400 MKii f4.5-5.6

Settings used to capture this image

  • ISO 100 – I used a very low ISO making the foreground sharp and dark.
  • Aperture f5.6 – I wanted just the Rhino in focus that’s why I kept the f - stop low.
  • Shutter Speed - 1/1250 – I used a higher Shutter Speed to make the image darker (silhouette).

Editing used on this image

I lifted the blacks; dropped the shadows and increased the temperature somewhat.
