A Week in the Bush Vol. 131

on Dec 01, 2016

The week started off with a sighting of the male cheetah who had been seen a couple of times last week. He was seen again hunting in the middle of this week, but was unsuccessful in his attempts.

We had a new male lion from the Kruger National Park on the reserve earlier this week, later to be identified as the N’waswishaka male who is going on 9 years old.

The Southern Pride has continued to astound us with their voracious hunger as they continue to kill buffalo on a regular basis. The pride is absolutely thriving at the moment but things could become interesting as the buffalo and other antelope become stronger again after the rains and better grazing!

With the coming rain, many little creatures have begun emerging once more and plants and grasses are regenerating with some much-needed moisture.

General game viewing has been fantastic again this week with regular sightings of hyena, zebra, giraffe, impala, blue wildebeest; as well as some amazing bird sightings!

We have been treated to amazing leopard sightings – herewith some of the highlights...

After a few of week’s absence, we had a couple of great sightings of White Dam and her male cub. In the first sighting, White Dam was sharing her duiker kill with her cub who hissed and growled at his mother the whole time! In another sighting, her cub had come across an old buffalo carcass in which he ate a bit, then started rolling and rubbing on and against it so as to help mask his scent. He lounged in the soft new grass and then climbed a tree much to the delight of our guests before he wandered off again.

Kigelia female was on the hunt and managed to kill a Grey Duiker. She then hoisted it in a tree where she enjoyed her prize!

With Little Bush and her cub, one can almost always expect something special in the sighting from their playfulness, interaction with one another to their time spent together feeding and grooming – this is a bond not easily broken!

The Toulon Pack of wild dogs have been seen numerous times this week, and have had a lot of successful hunts!

We end off this week’s blog with two special sightings from the past week:

We crossed paths with two very relaxed Honey Badgers who were absolutely unconcerned with our presence as they went about their business digging up insects and some other interesting things.

Two Bush Babies peered down on us from high up in the boughs of a Marula tree. They seemed to be very curious and did not jump away until they had sufficiently perused our vehicle.
