A Week in the Bush Vol. 127

on Nov 03, 2016

The week started off pretty much where it ended last week with us enjoying some amazing sightings of the Southern Pride cubs – playing, rolling, stalking – all much to the delight of guests and guides alike.

Just when we thought sightings couldn’t get any better, the lions blew us away with two consecutive kills - described by some rangers as “one of my best ever sightings”!!

The Southern Pride, Charleston males, and the cubs were resting at a waterhole when two buffalo approached the water for a drink. The lions jumped into action! As the one Charleston male was busy suffocating the one buffalo, a female left the male to it and headed straight for another buffalo close by! Within minutes, they had successfully taken down their second buffalo! What an incredible sighting!!

Staying with the cats, leopard sightings have also been frequent with Little Bush and her cub hanging around their nyala kill in the beginning of the week! Towards the end of the week, Mahlathini was seen in close proximity to them and a kill which he was interested in. Little Bush sent a clear message to him that he was not welcome!

Towards the end of the week, we came across Maxabeni on a sub-adult baboon kill! It’s always good to see him around and looking in such great condition.

We ended the week’s leopard sightings with Kigelia as she made her way down a riverbed to cool off in the mid-afternoon heat!

We have had a couple of sightings this week of an extremely small new born elephant calf. It’s always such a special sight to see the bonds between these animals!

With some very hot days, a lot of animals are frequenting the waterholes around the reserve; or being seen on the move towards water to quench their thirst.

Kyle was lucky enough to capture some great photos of three Yellow-billed Storks fishing for breakfast one morning; as well as a Purple Roller who managed to catch a snake (Black-headed Centipede Eater) and was hitting it against a tree before swallowing it whole.

We hope you have enjoyed this week’s recap and look forward to seeing what the bush has in store for us in the coming week...
