Week in the Bush Vol. 123

on Oct 06, 2016

It’s been a week filled with wonderful sightings, some animals are doing really well while other are starting to slow down a lot! We have had a little bit of rain this week but was only about 3mm which hasn’t made much of a difference.

The lions are really doing well as they have been seen on kills weekly. The females have now all joined and it is really a sight to see all eight cubs together.

But with all the cubs together, there’s not really a lot of sleep time for the rest of the pride as the cubs are constantly busy stalking and jumping on each other and when they have had enough of each other, they seem to put their focus on the females. This is good as this is where their hunting skills start and muscles are built.

The female with four cubs has also been doing a bit of walking with her cubs and took them towards a waterhole where it seems like it was their first time to see so much water in one place. They have really stolen all of our hearts and I really hope that all of them make it to adulthood.

With the two Charleston males making the most of their hunting skills, they have killed two buffalo in the last two days and before that were found on a buffalo kill along with the females and a kudu kill just before that. They seem to have no competition coming their side at the moment so things are looking great for the males and the pride.

Leopards are also in great condition at the moment! Little Bush, her cub, and Maxabeni were really lucky in finding a big buffalo bull that passed away. They were feeding on it for almost two days before eventually getting chased off by hyenas.

Little Bush’s cub has grown a lot of confidence and went back to steal a piece of meat and took it up a tree, safe from the hyenas. Let’s just hope that bravery doesn’t get her killed.

Since the fight between Maxabeni and Kashane, Maxabeni has been around a lot more often scent marking all over the place and even calling every now and then, he is definitely feeling the pressure at the moment.

There have also been sightings of a new male leopard hanging around the area, known as the Mambiri male. He has not moved too far into Maxabeni’s territory but surely a fight is coming soon.

General game viewing has really been tops lately with big herds of buffalo moving through our area daily.

It’s really interesting to see how the herds are almost just browsing at the moment and even eating dead leaves off the ground, but still some of them are in good condition.

We have also had lots of giraffe in the area with towers almost around every corner. They are really an amazing animal to spend time with and at times, they might even lead you straight towards predators!

Let’s hope sightings continue as is and hope for some good rain in the coming week!
