A Week in the Bush Vol. 107

on Jun 15, 2016

This week has gone by in a flash! And talking about a flash, we had a fantastic sighting of the fastest land mammal, the cheetah. Always a rare sighting here at Sabi Sabi, it was a welcome treat for all of us, guests and rangers alike!

There have been a few big herds of buffalo that have wandered to and fro across the property and have allowed us the time to gaze upon the awesome coordination they seem to have as hundreds of them march in the same direction as they follow the path finders.

Maxabeni has been found a few times as well while he has been out and about, always marking his territory and making sure that no invaders are testing his boundaries. We don't get to see much of him these days as he is so preoccupied with this ceaseless task. He also has to contend with the hyenas always following him while he tries to bring something down to eat.

There have also been massive herds of elephants that have come through the area and within these we have had been able to have a closer look into their day to day lives as well as their awesome interactions with each other. Their movements being so deliberate and also so light footed for such cumbersome behemoths.

The Southern Pride and Charleston males have been seen numerous times and on all these occasions they have shown us how strong their bonds are. There was even a very short lived attempt by one of the males at trying to initiate a mating session with one of the females but this did not come to a culmination and the female kept chasing him off.

The cubs keep us in stitches with their boisterous antics and I'm sure they keep their family on their toes too!

The smaller things are also not missed and some awesome little creatures have been found such as a grasshopper that Tayla managed to get a shot of as well as a pair of Saddle-billed Storks who have been seen fishing in one of the dams. In the same dam we have seen a pair of Yellow-billed Storks as well.

There have been quite a few sightings of some very beautiful birds as you can see below. Even though it is our winter and all of the migratory birds have gone north, we still have a fantastic array to keep our guests enthralled by their beauty.
