Monochrome Monday #77

on Jun 13, 2016

If you want to learn what someone fears losing, watch what they photograph. - Anonymous

In this day and age, it’s hard to believe that we will still be able to spend time in any true wilderness areas in the next twenty years at the rate that the human race is going. This is an idea, no a fear, that I’ve had for many years now, but I have to believe that we will somehow ‘wake up’ out of this state of indifference and ensure that future generations will still be able to do what we are doing right now. A bit gloomy a topic I know, but it would be ignorant to think that we don’t have a real issue on our hands. Thankfully, safari operations like Sabi Sabi are doing more than their fair share of promoting the protection and conservation of wilderness in Southern Africa and as long as places like this exist, we have a chance at ensuring our kids get to experience what we are lucky enough to experience now. I guess this is why I love documenting wildlife through my photography, and why I love guiding as a profession. I feel so blessed every day I get to go out there in the bush, spending time with animals and sharing the experience of the African wilderness with people from all over the world, creating awareness of the importance of conservation. I hope you all enjoy this week’s selection of wildlife in monochrome and that it provides you all with some food for thought for the future of the world’s wild places.

Bateleur Eagles are incredibly beautiful birds of prey and one of my absolute favourites. Pictured here is an immature bird, characterized by the uniformly brown plumage and actually takes an average of seven years to reach full maturity and the striking features I love so much about them.

Elephant bulls are extremely powerful creatures and just so majestic. To me they are the real kings of the African Bush and I love these half portrait compositions of them.

03Mike Palmer Ellie Calf 180416

This has got to be one of my favourite images this year of one of my favourite animals. Baby animals are always great to spend time with, but there is just something incredible about baby elephants. They are very much like humans in so many ways and always offer hours of entertainment.

A leopard in her environment is an awe inspiring sight to behold. They are amazing creatures and so well adapted to life in this environment.

05Mike Palmer LBC Cub 170416 2

Leopard cubs become increasingly bolder and inquisitive of their surroundings as they get older and luckily for us, we get to witness these events without interfering with the animal’s natural behavior.

06Mike Palmer Lions 160416 2

The Charleston male lions are a formidable force in the southern Sabi Sand Game Reserve and at 5 and a half years old, they still have many years ahead of them. Long may they prosper...

07Mike Palmer Mazino 220516 1

My favourite of the two Charleston boys, Mazino as we call him, moving with such confidence in his domain.

08Mike Palmer Stars 270416 1

The Winter season is phenomenal for stars and star photography. Star photography and night landscapes are among my favourite pastimes and to be honest, there isn’t anything better than being out in the middle of the bush, stargazing and listening to the sounds of the wild.

09Mike Palmer WD Y.Male 290516 1

The young male cub, son of Maxabeni and the White Dam female, is slowly and surely gaining his confidence in life. At 18 months old, he is still far from being independent and when he does so he will have his proper name assigned to him, although we will probably never see him again from that point on as he disperses to find his own place in the world.

10Mike Palmer Wild Dogs 300416 2

Wild dogs and hyenas are not the best of friends and the dogs will jump at any opportunity to take action against them, even though hyenas are much larger the dogs usually have numbers on their side.
